​ABUJA – President Bola Tinubu has extended his warm congratulations to former President and elder statesman, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, as he marks his 89th birthday on March 5, 2025.

​In a tribute released on Wednesday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu described Obasanjo as a figure of “towering influence” whose impact resonates far beyond the borders of Nigeria. The President highlighted the former leader’s unique place in history as a man of immense courage and sacrifice, noting his double tenure as both a military Head of State (1976–1979) and the first civilian president of the Fourth Republic (1999–2007).

​President Tinubu reflected on the historic milestones that have defined Obasanjo’s long career, including his role in leading troops to preserve the nation’s unity during the Civil War and his endurance of imprisonment while speaking out against past military tyranny.

​”The President acknowledges the zeal and wisdom Chief Obasanjo has brought into Nigeria’s development process,” the statement read, referencing the former leader’s extensive literary contributions and frequent public interventions aimed at nation-building.

​To mark this milestone, the Olusegun Obasanjo Foundation (OOF) recently concluded a massive medical mission, providing free healthcare, including eye and ear screenings, to over 10,000 residents in Lagos suburbs—a move organizers say reflects the former president’s lifelong commitment to public service.
