“They Ruined My Reputation”: Student Dies by Suicide After Police Detention Over ₦8,000 Debt

What began as a debt dispute over ₦8,000 ended with the death of a 30-year-old student in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Al-Amin Mohammed had recently returned home after spending days in police detention and prison custody. His family thought the worst was over. It was not.

According to his mother, Simiat Mohammed, Al-Amin returned from the Agodi Custodial Centre on September 14 a changed man.

She said he barely ate and withdrew from people. He repeatedly complained about the humiliation of being detained, taken to court and remanded in prison over an allegation he insisted was untrue.

Three days after his release, tragedy struck.

The family said Al-Amin ingested rat poison at his residence on September 17. Before that, he had reportedly recorded a voice note expressing frustration and asking his siblings to look after their mother.

His family rushed him to hospitals seeking treatment. His father said three hospitals rejected him before he was eventually taken to the University College Hospital, Ibadan.

The family said he died after treatment efforts failed.

How ₦8,000 became a police case

According to his mother, Al-Amin had borrowed ₦23,000 from a Point-of-Sale operator identified as Kazeem. He had repaid ₦15,000, leaving ₦8,000.

The disagreement over the outstanding balance eventually became a police matter and later led to his detention and remand, according to the family.

The family says Al-Amin maintained that the allegation against him was false. The circumstances surrounding the original dispute, the police process and the decisions that led to his detention are matters that require independent verification and, where necessary, institutional response.

But the family’s account has raised a difficult question about how minor financial disputes can escalate into criminal-justice encounters with consequences far beyond the original disagreement.
