‘The World of 1945’: Sierra Leone Demands Permanent African Voice at UN Security Council

Africa has more than 1.6 billion people.It has no permanent seat on the UN Security Council.

Sierra Leone President Julius Maada Bio says that contradiction is becoming harder to defend.

Speaking at the UN General Assembly, Bio said the Security Council still reflects “the world of 1945” rather than today’s global realities.

He argued that the Council cannot be fully legitimate or effective while Africa remains permanently excluded from its highest level of decision-making.

Bio also said durable global solutions on peace, climate, food, energy and technology cannot be built without African leadership.

As coordinator of the African Union’s Committee of Ten, Sierra Leone is pushing for two permanent African seats and five non-permanent seats on the Council.

The argument is not new. But the timing is significant.

Africa’s complaint is different. It is not simply asking whether the UN works.It is asking who gets to decide when the UN acts.
