Tennis Prospect Killed in World Cup Celebration Crash

​The Argentine sports community is reeling this week following the death of promising 16-year-old tennis talent Luisana “Luchi” Schönberger. The young athlete was killed early Sunday morning, July 12, in a high-speed vehicle collision in Eldorado, Misiones, while joining local celebrations of Argentina’s 2026 World Cup quarter-final victory.

​Schönberger, a standout junior player who trained at the Eldorado Lawn Tennis Club, was a front-seat passenger in a Volkswagen Golf that lost control during the early morning hours. Authorities report that the vehicle struck the rear of a Toyota Corolla before colliding violently with a tree.

​The impact claimed the life of the driver, 20-year-old Renzo Retamozo, alongside Schönberger. Three other passengers, aged between 16 and 20, sustained injuries, with one remaining in critical condition.

​Investigators are currently examining footage from the scene, which indicates the Volkswagen Golf had been traveling at high speeds behind a Ford Escort. Police are probing reports that the vehicles were engaged in an illegal street race as the town celebrated the national team’s 3-1 win over Switzerland. A third vehicle has since been impounded as part of the ongoing judicial inquiry.

​Tributes have poured in for the teenager, who had achieved a top-five national ranking in her age group. The Eldorado Lawn Tennis Club, where she had been a fixture since childhood, remembered her as an “adopted daughter” and a testament to dedication and athletic promise.

​The Argentine Tennis Association released a formal statement expressing the shared grief of the national tennis community, while staff and students at her school, Instituto Superior San José, honored her memory as a popular and bright pupil.

​As the town of Eldorado marks this profound loss, authorities emphasize that the investigation into the circumstances of the crash continues. Schönberger was laid to rest this past Sunday afternoon.
