Teen Couple Arrested in Connection to Five-Person Killing

​EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. — A community is reeling in the aftermath of a “targeted mass shooting” that claimed the lives of five members of a single family, an act of violence that authorities and loved ones are struggling to comprehend.

​Two teenagers, a 15-year-old girl and her 16-year-old boyfriend, Ja’ymeir Davis, are in custody following the horrific events that unfolded across multiple locations in East St. Louis on Sunday, July 12. According to prosecutors, the 16-year-old boy will be prosecuted as an adult, while the legal proceedings for the 15-year-old girl will begin in juvenile court with the possibility of a transfer to the St. Clair County criminal court.

​A Family Shattered

​The victims have been identified as 74-year-old Patricia May; her 49-year-old daughter, Cherie May; 25-year-old Shania Thompson; 24-year-old Devin May; and 21-year-old Quentin Thompson. Two other individuals also sustained serious injuries during the attacks but survived.

​Marcus May, who lost his mother, sister, nephew, and two stepchildren in the spree, has spoken out about the devastating loss. He described the event as his “whole family in one fell swoop”. In a candid account of the days leading up to the tragedy, he revealed that his daughter had been struggling with behavioral issues, including repeated trouble at school and instances of running away from home.

​He noted that his daughter had allegedly stolen a gun from her mother, an act he and her mother had reported to authorities prior to the shooting.

​A Calculated Attack

​Illinois State Police Director Brendan Kelly confirmed that the shootings occurred at three distinct locations throughout the city. While authorities have not officially commented on a specific motive, court documents indicate the level of brutality involved; Davis is accused of killing Patricia May and mutilating her remains.

​”I can’t show her no sympathy,” Marcus May told local media regarding his daughter’s involvement. “She chose to do this”.

​Community and Official Response

​The incident has been classified by experts as a “family annihilation,” a rare but devastating type of mass violence. Officials have emphasized that this was a targeted attack rather than a random act of violence, seeking to reassure a shaken public.

​”It’s terrible. It’s evil. But it will not keep this city down,” Director Kelly stated during a press conference. “The progress we have made will not be lost”.

​As the investigation continues, the focus has turned toward the warning signs that may have preceded the tragedy and how the legal system will address the involvement of the two minors. Ja’ymeir Davis has been charged with 12 counts, including five counts of murder, and remains in custody.
