The Bauchi State Police Command has detained Lawal Nasiru, a 28-year-old Almajiri teacher from Unguwar Jarmai in Darazo Local Government Area, for allegedly abusing an 11-year-old pupil, Sa’id Sani. According to a police statement issued by spokesperson CSP Ahmed Wakil on Tuesday, the minor was tied with a heavy rope and severely beaten with a stick and thick cable, suffering multiple injuries to his hands and legs.
The assault reportedly occurred on September 21, 2025, when Nasiru allegedly restrained the boy to prevent him from fleeing the Tsangaya school before his parents arrived. The incident was reported the following day by Idris Mohammed, a social welfare officer in Darazo, who brought the injured pupil to the Divisional Police Headquarters.
Following the complaint, the Divisional Police Officer, SP Auwalu Ilu, led a team to arrest Nasiru and took the victim to Darazo General Hospital for urgent medical treatment. During interrogation, the suspect admitted to the acts of cruelty, while the victim described being confined for an extended period.
The Commissioner of Police in Bauchi, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, has ordered the transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a discreet and thorough investigation. Upon conclusion, Nasiru is expected to be formally charged in court for criminal assault and child abuse offenses. The police have assured the public of firm action to protect children from such maltreatment.
This case highlights ongoing concerns about the treatment of vulnerable Almajiri pupils and calls for stricter supervision of schools and teachers in Bauchi State
