Billionaire Industrialist Olorogun Oskar Ibru Dies at 67

Olorogun Oskar Eyovbirere Ibru, a Nigerian billionaire industrialist and the chairman of the renowned Ibru Organisation, has died at the age of 67 after a brief illness, his family confirmed on Wednesday. Details regarding the circumstances of his passing have not yet been disclosed.

As the eldest son of the late Olorogun Michael Ibru, the founder of the Ibru Organisation, Oskar Ibru played a pivotal role in maintaining and expanding the vast family conglomerate. Under his leadership, the group thrived with diversified business interests spanning shipping, oil and gas, real estate, fishing, and commerce, sustaining the legacy of one of Nigeria’s most influential business families.

Educated at Igbobi College in Nigeria, Oskar Ibru furthered his studies abroad, earning a degree from Skidmore College followed by a master’s degree from the Atlanta University Graduate School of Business. He returned to Nigeria in 1983, initially working as a management trainee at The Guardian before joining Emsee Shipping Lines Limited, where he ascended to managing director in 1992.

Beyond his business acumen, Ibru was also a committed philanthropist. He chaired the Dream Child Foundation, a non-governmental organization that uses music as a tool to empower African children, collaborating with the World Bank and KPMG. His generosity extended to his community, notably donating relief materials to internally displaced persons in Delta State.

Known for his charismatic personality and social grace, Ibru was widely cherished not only in business circles but also socially. The publisher of Ovation International, Dele Momodu, described him as “an extremely friendly gentleman and a socialite per excellence” who was deeply loved by family and friends.

Oskar Ibru’s death marks a significant loss to the Nigerian business landscape and the Ibru family, coming less than a decade after the death of the family patriarch in 2016. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced soon.

He is survived by his wife, Chief Wanda Ibru, the curator of the Ijebu National Museum, and their three children.
