John Sellers, who moved to Sweden at age 10, was deported in January after three failed attempts to remain, despite being educated in the country and newly married to a Swedish woman.
Eurostat data shows Sweden has issued deportation orders to 2,500 British nationals since 2021, a third of the entire number across the EU.
A Life Uprooted
John Sellers was just 10 years old when his parents moved from Essex to Sweden under the free movement rights that came with the UK’s membership of the EU.
They chose Sweden because they liked the education system and thought it was a “good place to bring up children”.
Twenty-four years later, Sellers, now 34, educated in Sweden, a trained teacher, and newly married to his Swedish partner Caroline was deported.
“Whenever I come to England, I feel like a tourist. Sweden is my home,” Sellers said.
The Struggle to Stay
Sellers was deported in January after three failed attempts to remain in the country. His ordeal began shortly after Brexit, when he discovered that his right to live and work in Sweden, something he had taken for granted his entire adult life, had evaporated overnight.
His father died when he was 16, and his mother moved back to England after he started a college course to become a teacher. He had built his entire life in Sweden, but the law no longer recognised his right to be there.
“Quite frankly, we have been holding our tongues too long. I am very well aware that different countries have different rules on immigration, but none of this would have happened were it not for Brexit,” he said.
“You’re Not Whole. You’re Broken”
The deportation has torn Sellers apart from his new wife, Caroline, who suffers from chronic conditions including fibromyalgia and symptoms of long Covid.
“Not only do I feel like I’ve let down Caroline, I’ve let down my family, let down myself. I’ve been ripped from the love of my life, my other half,” Sellers said.”The pain is … I wish people wouldn’t have to go through this kind of pain, because you’re not whole. You’re broken” .
Hit with the cost of fighting deportation and unable to work due to his immigration status, Sellers said he does not know how long it will be before he can physically hold his wife in his arms again.
Caroline described the toll the case has taken: “It’s just horrible, the feeling of finally having someone to help you with things, someone to lean on and someone who is always there for you and then having to spend so much time, effort and money on fighting the government just to be able to continue that relationship” .
A Widow’s Fight to Stay
Sellers is not alone. Joyce Thomas, a 78-year-old British widow, has been ordered to leave Sweden after 21 years in the country because her post-Brexit residence application was too late.
She has until 7 September to leave or face deportation and a potential ban from the Schengen area.
Her husband died of cancer in 2023. She only learned in 2022 that she should have made a formal application to stay in Sweden. Her application was rejected in 2024 after authorities said she could not demonstrate “reasonable grounds” for filing it late.
The Numbers Behind the Crisis
According to Eurostat, Sweden has issued deportation orders to 2,500 British nationals since 2021, one-third of the total number of Britons ordered to leave across the entire 27-member EU.
The UK Foreign Office calculates that fully 27.5 per cent of Britons in Sweden were refused post-Brexit residency, compared to an EU average of under 4 per cent.
The refusal rate in Sweden is three times higher than in any other member state.

Another British citizen, Gavin Watkins, a head chef who has lived in Sweden for over 20 years, is also at risk of deportation after working for three years without realising he had lost his right to reside in the country.
Sweden Defends Its Position
Sweden’s Migration Minister Johan Forssell has defended the country’s approach, saying Sweden has “fulfilled its commitments” under the Brexit withdrawal agreement.
He noted that the European Commission, which is legally mandated to ensure EU member states implement the agreement correctly, was “onboard” with Sweden’s approach.
However, critics argue that Sweden is taking an unnecessarily harsh line. Håkan Svenneling, a Swedish MP who intervened in the case of Joyce Thomas, told The Guardian:
“It seems to me that the Swedish government thinks everything is fine even though British citizens are being deported from Sweden right now. Not acting is also an action in this situation”.
A Lesson for Nigerians
This heartbreaking saga offers a powerful lesson for Nigerians, especially the young.
For 24 years, John Sellers believed Sweden was his home. He was educated there, worked there, fell in love there, married there. Yet in the eyes of the law, he was still a foreigner, and a foreigner who had lost his right to stay.
The same is true for Nigerians who seek greener pastures abroad. No matter how long you live in a foreign country, no matter how well you integrate, no matter how much you contribute, you are always at the mercy of immigration laws.
A change in government, a shift in policy, a missed deadline, and your entire life can be upended.
This is not a warning against seeking opportunities abroad. It is a reminder to always have a plan B. It is a reminder that citizenship is not just a piece of paper, it is protection. It is a reminder that home is not just where you live, but where you belong by right.
