By Olusegun Patrick Odegbami

On March 22, 1998, I was officially decorated with the title of Sports Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in Abuja by the then Minister of Sports. This honor complemented my previous national distinction as a Member of the Order of the Niger (MON).

I hold both recognitions with the utmost gravity. They were earned through hard work, dedication, personal sacrifice, patriotism, discipline, and the pursuit of sporting excellence for our flag. Naturally, such accolades carry profound responsibilities. Consequently, I have consistently strived to honor the nation’s generosity by living a simple, disciplined, and exemplary life, serving as a beacon for younger generations through the transformative window of sports. Whether I have successfully met these unwritten expectations is a verdict I leave entirely to Nigerians and posterity.

Today, Nigerian football stands precariously at a historic crossroads. A moment has arrived that demands a true test of my judgment and character—a burden I must shoulder even in the evening of my life. I have nothing to lose by standing firm for the absolute truth. To remain silent now would be to fail the government, the people of Nigeria, and the very game that has defined my existence. Therefore, I am raising my voice once more.

Nigerians know me through my decades of active contribution to sports and football: playing the game, administering it, organizing it, promoting it, and deploying it as a powerful instrument for education, empowerment, health, patriotism, youth orientation, and national diplomacy.

My journey began in 1973. As an undergraduate, I was called up from the National Sports Festival to the senior national football team, the Green Eagles, forging an unbreakable bond with Nigerian football that spans 53 years. Over this timeframe, I have proudly worn the national colors, captained both the national team and our Olympic contingent, served on the board of the Nigerian Football Association, and chaired the Governing Council of the National Institute of Sports. Furthermore, I single-handedly managed two Nigerian athletes outside of football to win Gold and Silver medals at the Olympic Games, served on numerous governmental sports panels, and established an NGO dedicated to combining sports with academic scholarships. Today, I lead a specialized unit developing sports diplomacy policies within Nigeria’s foreign affairs architecture.

The scope of my work across these national assignments remains an open book. Yet, despite parading some of the world’s most talented footballers, our international achievements have hit a stagnant plateau and entered a worrying decline. Our recent competitive results are utterly unacceptable and need no rehashing here.

The undeniable reality is that football administration over the past two decades has woefully failed to match our abundant talent or fulfill our national potential. The growth of our football industry has been systematically stunted by faulty decisions born more of ignorance than malice since the early 1990s. These administrative missteps have solidified into a toxic norm—a self-sustaining monster whose beneficiaries refuse to dismantle it because they thrive on its deeply flawed architecture.

Next month, another election into the board of the Nigerian football governing body is scheduled to take place. I deliberately use the word “association” because that nomenclature sits at the root of our administrative anomalies—a complex structural flaw that will soon be laid bare before a civil court for judicial interrogation, especially given that a subsisting court judgment to amend these structures has been treated with brazen disrespect for nearly eight years. In strict legal terms, the “Nigeria Football Federation” does not even legally exist.

As for the upcoming elections, the write-up is effectively finished; the outcomes have been predetermined long before a single ballot is cast. The individuals permitted to contest already know their fate, while independent contenders are systematically sidelined and sent on wild-goose chases across the country in pursuit of unattainable endorsements within an artificially rushed timeline.

Worse still, these elections are designed to occur far from prying eyes to shield them from transparency. They will take place in secluded venues far from federation headquarters and the supervising National Sports Commission—clearing the path for unchecked manipulation, bribery, and corruption.

The supervising ministry must intervene. The National Sports Commission finds its hands tied only by fictitious, baseless threats of international bans that hold no water under any recognized global statute. History, documented facts, and incontrovertible figures must now illuminate these clouded structures if our national game is to survive.

My decades of experience cannot be purchased in a marketplace, nor can my patriotic warnings be casually dismissed. Elections into the NFF have regrettably devolved into a quadrennial ritual of crisis, perpetually marred by manipulation, irregularities, and self-serving maneuvering. This dysfunction occurs to the detriment of a sports-loving nation that watches helplessly as its football industry fails to boost the economy or empower gifted youths with global opportunities.

In the coming days, I will formally present the documents currently governing Nigerian football to our civil courts for rigorous legal interpretation. We must transparently unpack the real powers and statutory limits of international bodies regarding our internal affairs, the proper legal status of State Football Associations, the gross inequities in lopsided board representation, and the fundamental justification for government—the nation’s primary funder—to tolerate such a convoluted, politicized, and expensive electoral process.

The weeks ahead will be defining. I sincerely hope that all Nigerians, including the members of the football association, will recognize the absolute necessity of temporarily halting these elections so that our football can finally find its footing, heal, and rebuild.
