AWKA — Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, has officially sworn in 21 newly elected local government chairmen and their deputies, challenging them to treat public office as an immediate call to diligent service, fiscal discipline, and strict accountability.
The inauguration ceremony, held at the Government House in Awka, follows the conclusion of the local government polls and the subsequent declaration of results by the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC). All 21 chairmanship seats were clinched by candidates of the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).
Addressing the newly sworn-in leaders, Governor Soludo reminded them that the expectations of the electorate are high, urging them to quickly transition from campaign aspirations to the realities of grassroots governance.
“As you begin your journey, know that it is a call to serve,” Soludo stated, emphasizing that every minute in office counts toward their stewardship. He advised the officials to take their oath of office to heart, suggesting they keep visible reminders of their solemn pledge to the public.
Highlighting APGA’s two-decade political dominance across the state, the governor noted that many of the party’s candidates faced minimal opposition. He nevertheless charged the chairmen to build upon existing administrative structures and leave the third tier of government significantly stronger for their successors.
To foster financial sustainability, Soludo encouraged the council leaders to explore legal provisions permitting resource pooling for shared obligations. Furthermore, he directed them to thoroughly review handover notes from preceding administrations, paying close attention to inherited assets and liabilities as they set out to tackle grassroots challenges.
The oath of office was administered by the State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Tochukwu Nweke (SAN).
