Safety Concerns Raised as Ogun Government and IBEDC Discuss Encroachments Under Power Lines

The Ogun State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, TPl. Olatunji Odunlami, emphasized the necessity for providers of public infrastructure to adhere to the state’s masterplan during a meeting with the Health, Safety, and Environment Department of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC).

The IBEDC team sought collaboration and support from the Ministry to enforce regulations preventing trading and habitation under High Tension Lines (HTL) across the state, highlighting the safety risks associated with such encroachments.

In response, the Ogun State government acknowledged the need for a strategic approach to clear illegal structures under power lines.

They noted that these structures, often owned by petty traders, pose hazards to residents but also recognized the challenges faced by traders seeking affordable alternatives.

Commissioner Odunlami emphasized that providers of public infrastructure must obtain planning permits before installations, ensuring alignment with the state’s masterplan.

He urged them to engage with relevant government agencies to receive guidance on suitable locations, aiming to mitigate encroachment issues.

In his remarks, IBEDC’s Business Manager, Gbenga Bamisile, requested government assistance in promoting safety and preventing encroachment.

He suggested the establishment of a joint enforcement team to address the persistent challenges despite awareness campaigns and stakeholder engagements.

The meeting highlighted the importance of collaboration between infrastructure providers and regulatory bodies to ensure compliance with development plans, ultimately safeguarding lives and property in Ogun State.
