Christian Community Upset Over Asake’s “Only Me” Music Video, Cites Religious Insensitivity

Christians have voiced criticism against Afrobeat artist Ahmed Ololade, popularly known as Asake, regarding his latest music video titled “Only Me,” citing perceived disrespect towards Christianity.

In the video, directed by TG Omori and amassing over 150,000 views within five hours of release, Asake is depicted wearing priestly attire, which has sparked controversy among viewers.

Solomon_Buchi, expressing concerns on Thursday via his handle, X, stated, “Asake continues to show disrespect towards the Christian faith in his music videos. Depicting the Eucharist and dressing in priestly garments for a music video unrelated to Christianity is disrespectful.”

“In his ‘Bandana’ video, he portrays black goats entering the church with cloven tongues of fire above strange individuals. Asake, presumably a Muslim, chooses not to similarly challenge his faith. Why do Christians support musicians who disrespect Christianity openly?”

BG_Liberty commented, “This video rates 2/10. Who approved this concept? Such disrespect towards Christianity! I wish he would treat his own religion in a similar manner.”

Another user, @AniBae94, remarked, “After featuring over 50 goats in a secular music video filmed in a church, Asake is again seen dressed as a priest and handling the communion in an inappropriate manner, disrespecting Christianity. I am deeply disturbed.”

Aliuhammeed2 expressed, “When you tolerate everything, you stand for nothing. Speaking up leads to accusations of excessive religiosity. This is the outcome of liberalism eroding citizens’ faith, yet they fail to stand firm.”

AbjaySeries added, “My concern is that Christians still support his music. He mocks your faith, and yet you remain his fans?”

This incident recalls the backlash faced by singer Olamilekan Taiwo, also known as Logos Olori, under Davido Music Worldwide, over his music video “Jaye Lo,” released in July 2023. The video, featuring scenes near a mosque and incorporating Islamic phrases, drew criticism from Muslims and some fans for perceived insensitivity.
