NAIROBI — In what is being heralded as a watershed moment for the continent’s economic independence, Kenyan President William Ruto, alongside African industrialist Aliko Dangote, has officially broken ground on the monumental Dangote East Africa Petroleum Refinery in Lamu County.
Valued at KSh2.2 trillion ($16 billion), the groundbreaking ceremony drew an elite assemblage of four African heads of state and high-level international delegations, underscoring the cross-border geopolitical and economic magnitude of the undertaking.

Designed with a massive processing capacity of 700,000 barrels per day, the upcoming facility will stand as East and Central Africa’s largest refinery and rank among the premier petroleum processing installations globally. Beyond alleviating regional energy vulnerabilities and shrinking dependence on costly foreign fuel imports, the venture is conceptualized as an expansive, multi-faceted industrial complex. It will integrate a 1,000-megawatt power plant, a dedicated plastic manufacturing facility, and large-scale agro-chemical and fertilizer production units.

Economic analysts project that the mega-project will expand Kenya’s Gross Domestic Product by 12 percent, injecting a yearly foreign direct investment of $4 billion throughout its four-year construction cycle. Furthermore, the development is expected to generate upwards of 60,000 direct employment opportunities, build advanced local technical capacity, and act as the principal catalyst for transforming the Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia Transport (LAPSSET) Corridor into a thriving global commercial hub.

Speaking at the historic event, leaders emphasized that the project serves as a definitive rebuke to Africa’s historic economic trap: exporting raw commodities while bleeding wealth and jobs through the importation of finished goods. By turning bold ambitions into tangible infrastructure, the Lamu refinery marks a decisive shift toward a self-sustaining industrial future for the continent.
