LONDON — British heavyweight titans Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua have officially launched the countdown to their long-awaited mega-fight, setting aside years of verbal sparring for a respectful face-to-face encounter in London.
The two-time world champions are scheduled to collide in front of an expected 80,000 roaring fans at a stadium in Cardiff on December 11, with the vacant WBA super heavyweight title anticipated to be on the line.
Addressing a crowd of 1,000 supporters at a joint press conference, the pair surprised onlookers by trading camaraderie rather than insults. Fury lightheartedly offered his rival a pint of Guinness after the bout, while Joshua playfully tickled Fury’s midriff during their intense staredown.
Dismissing critics who argue the matchup comes past their prime, Fury championed the bout as a fitting crescendo for two storied careers. “It’s the icing on the cake for two great careers when we throw down in front of 80,000 people. May the best man win,” the “Gypsy King” remarked.
Though negotiations initially pointed toward lucrative overseas venues in Saudi Arabia or the United States, Joshua expressed pride in bringing the historic clash back home. “We’ll inspire this generation and the next generation. It was people from this country supporting us. I’m fulfilling my destiny before I depart this world,” Joshua stated.
Fury boasts an impressive record of 36 victories from 39 professional bouts, with his sole career blemishes coming against Oleksandr Usyk in 2024. Meanwhile, Joshua enters the contest with 30 wins from 34 fights, seeking to cement his legacy following high-profile world title bouts earlier in the decade.
