MOSCOW — A senior Russian military logistics chief responsible for keeping frontline forces supplied with missiles and artillery has been assassinated in a targeted car bombing outside Moscow, following a catastrophic operational security blunder by his own son.

Colonel Damir Davydov, 57, died early Tuesday morning when an improvised explosive device (IED) ripped through a BMW X3 in Balashikha, a suburb roughly six miles east of the Russian capital. The attack represents another breach of the Kremlin’s internal security apparatus as Ukraine-linked partisan operations continue to strike high-value targets deep within Russian territory.

The Fatal Digital Footprint

While Russian state media and law enforcement have uncharacteristically withheld the victim’s official identity, independent investigative outlets and intelligence sources have confirmed Davydov’s death. Preliminary reports suggest assassins successfully tracked the commander after his son, Rafael—a Russian military cadet—carelessly posted a photograph on social media.

The image featured the young man posing next to the exact BMW X3 involved in the blast, with the vehicle’s license plate numbers clearly visible. Davydov did not officially own the luxury vehicle, a tactic frequently deployed by high-ranking Russian officials to evade surveillance. However, investigators believe the social media post inadvertently mapped the vehicle to the general’s location, giving tracking tools to the hit squad.

The Blown-Up Suburb

The explosion occurred around 5:30 a.m. local time on Koldunova Street in the Aviatorov neighborhood, a residential district primarily built for military personnel.

According to Russia’s Investigative Committee and eyewitness accounts, the explosive device was planted beneath the driver’s seat. It detonated with a force equivalent to up to 500 grams of TNT just as the vehicle pulled out of a parking space.

Dramatic security footage caught the moment the BMW erupted into a fireball from the rear and center chassis before rolling helplessly into a parked car. Eyebystanders rushed to pull Davydov from the burning wreckage while he was still conscious, but his injuries were too severe. He was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after.

Compounding the embarrassment for Moscow’s Federal Security Service (FSB), the assassination took place less than a mile from where Lieutenant General Yaroslav Moskalik was killed in an identical remote-controlled car bombing in April 2025.

Paranoia Mounts in the Kremlin

The vulnerability of Russia’s top military brass has reportedly triggered a wave of paranoia within the highest echelons of the state. In response to the wave of assassinations—which includes another car bombing that claimed the life of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov in Moscow just this week—President Vladimir Putin has drastically tightened his personal security.

Intelligence sources indicate that Putin has moved his adult daughters, Maria Vorontsova, 41, and Katerina Tikhonova, 39, into his heavily fortified forest palace complex at Valdai. The massive estate is guarded by sophisticated multi-layered air defense systems. Furthermore, the Russian leader has ordered an immediate audit and sweeping security check of the nation’s surveillance camera networks, fearing that foreign or domestic hackers are weaponizing municipal infrastructure to track Kremlin officials.

Russian authorities have opened a criminal investigation into the assassination, while another unexploded device was reportedly discovered and neutralized by bomb squads in southwest Moscow. Ukrainian authorities have maintained their standard policy of ambiguity, refusing to officially comment on operations conducted inside the Russian federation.
