JOHANNESBURG — A massive manhunt has been launched in Gauteng province after a heavily armed tactical gang stormed a gated informal settlement east of Johannesburg late Tuesday night, killing at least 12 people and wounding 10 others in what authorities have condemned as an “insane, heartless, and barbaric” massacre.

The coordinated assault unfolded at approximately 23:10 local time at the Jumpers Informal Settlement in the suburb of Cleveland, just six kilometers from Johannesburg’s city center.

According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), a gang of more than 10 suspects arrived in a white Toyota Quantum minibus taxi, which dropped them off near an Astron petrol station directly across the road. The gunmen, heavily armed with high-caliber rifles, breached the gated settlement through two separate entrances simultaneously.

Moving through the maze-like corridors of the settlement with calculated purpose, the assailants opened fire indiscriminately at multiple locations, catching residents completely off guard.

”I was sleeping when I suddenly heard one gunshot, then another. I just got under my bed and hid,” Gugu Magaqa, a traumatized resident, told local reporters, adding that the gunfire echoed through the settlement for over an hour. “All I was thinking was that I don’t want to die.”

Another resident recounted seeing her next-door neighbor shot just outside her doorstep. The man fled into his shack to hide, but the gunmen followed him inside and shot him again; he survived and is currently hospitalized.

Emergency responders and forensic teams arriving at the bloody scene discovered a grim sight. Eight adult men and three adult women were pronounced dead on the scene. A twelfth male victim succumbed to his injuries after being rushed to the hospital. Ten other individuals suffered severe gunshot wounds and are receiving treatment at various regional medical facilities.

Journalists visiting the site on Wednesday morning described harrowing scenes, including bullet casings littering the dirt pathways and a room near a local tavern with floors completely soaked in blood and marked by bloodied bare footprints.

The Shadow of the ‘Zama Zamas’

While police maintain that the official motive remains under investigation, the attack bears all the hallmarks of an organized crime execution linked to the region’s lucrative and deadly illicit mining trade.

Gauteng Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Tommy Mthombeni, who led a walk-through of the crime scene on Wednesday, acknowledged that investigators are strongly pursuing a link to illegal gold mining operations.

”As you know, this area is adjacent to the illegal mining area. We have those suspicions,” Mthombeni told reporters.

Crime intelligence officers on the ground confirmed that a room where several victims were targeted served as an active underground refinery used by zama zamas—informal, undocumented miners who extract gold from abandoned, disused shafts to sell on the black market. The multi-billion rand illicit trade is notoriously violent, governed by heavily armed syndicates vying fiercely for territorial control over processing sites and lucrative transit routes.

A Nation Gripped by Gun Violence

The Cleveland massacre is the latest flashpoint in South Africa’s ongoing crisis with violent crime. The country consistently ranks among those with the highest homicide rates globally, averaging over 60 murders every single day.

Mass shootings, particularly within marginalized and overcrowded informal settlements or local taverns, have drastically escalated. The violence persists despite aggressive state interventions; earlier this year, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa deployed the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) to volatile communities to help law enforcement clamp down on illegal mining networks.

Gun control advocates point out that the country is awash with firearms. Gunowners’ Association data indicates that alongside South Africa’s three million legally registered weapons, an estimated three million or more illegal, unlicensed firearms are circulating in the black market.

National and provincial SAPS leadership have deployed a multidisciplinary task team, combining crime intelligence, forensic experts, and tactical units, to track down the white Toyota Quantum and apprehend the gunmen. No arrests have been made as of Wednesday afternoon. Authorities have urged anyone with information regarding the suspects or the vehicle to urgently contact the police.
