Argentina defender Cristian “Cuti” Romero has paid tribute to Lionel Messi as the national team begins a new era following the veteran forward’s departure from international football.
Romero said Argentina would not have another player like Messi, whom he described as the greatest footballer of all time. “We are never going to have another player like Leo Messi. He’s the greatest of all time,” Romero said.
Romero also spoke about the influence Messi had on his generation of Argentine players.
“We watched him grow up from when we were very young, we saw him, but he always taught us to get back up again. He’s a role model, an example,” he said.
The comments came after Argentina defeated Bolivia 4-0 in a friendly, with Romero wearing the captain’s armband as the team began its post-Messi era.
Romero has played alongside Messi for Argentina and was part of the team that won the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Messi also led Argentina to Copa América titles in 2021 and 2024.
The 39-year-old has now ended his international career, although he is expected to make a farewell appearance for Argentina.
Romero’s comments reflect the scale of the transition facing the national team after almost two decades in which Messi became central to Argentina’s football identity.
ValidViewNetwork reports that Romero’s tribute comes as Argentina begins to develop a new leadership structure following Messi’s international departure, with Romero now taking on a more prominent role within the team.
