WARSAW — In a striking preview of a sci-fi future unfolding in real time, a contingent of roughly 30 autonomous robots took to the streets of Poland’s capital on Monday, staging an unusual demonstration outside the Ministry of Digital Affairs to demand urgent legislative controls on artificial intelligence and automation.

The protest, organized by the public advocacy initiative Democratism, brought together an eclectic mix of bipedal humanoid machines and four-legged quadrupedal robot dogs. Waving flags and moving in coordinated circles, the mechanical demonstrators broadcasted sharp, automated warnings across loudspeakers, chanting slogans such as “Defend workplaces,” “Time for rules,” and “Don’t wait, regulate.”

Grzegorz Kulis, an organizer behind the demonstration and former member of the Ministry of Family, Labor and Social Policy’s Labor Market Council, emphasized that the spectacle was designed to jolt the public into recognizing the fast-approaching reality of labor displacement.

“We particularly want to address the issue of the potential replacement of people both by humanoid robots and by artificial intelligence in cognitive work,” Kulis told Agence France-Presse (AFP). “If we don’t react now, we may soon have a problem.”

Addressing onlookers, one of the participating AI-powered humanoid machines, the Agibot A3, bluntly summarized the philosophy behind the rally: “The robots present here are meant to show that this technology is already a reality.” Kulis added that the choice to deploy physical machines on public sidewalks was intentional, noting that their ability to navigate city spaces independently demonstrates just how rapidly the technology has matured.

The high-visibility protest quickly drew the attention of high-level government officials. Poland’s Digital Affairs Minister, Krzysztof Gawkowski, stepped outside to observe the demonstration and engage with organizers. Gawkowski echoed concerns over the unchecked proliferation of advanced machinery, warning that autonomous systems integrated into evolving humanoids present a distinct policy challenge.

“Uncontrolled AI models, implemented into humanoids that will also keep evolving as robotisation moves forward, are a major problem,” Gawkowski cautioned.

The demonstration coincides with a critical legislative turning point for Poland as it works to operationalize the European Union’s sweeping AI Act. Following national legislation signed by President Karol Nawrocki to establish a supervisory framework, Poland is standing up dedicated regulatory bodies to enforce the bloc’s stringent risk-based controls on artificial intelligence.

As policymakers race to catch up with an accelerating technological curve, Monday’s mechanical march served as a visceral reminder that the boundary between human labor and machine automation is increasingly blurring.
