American rapper Rick Ross has been arrested in Miami Beach, Florida, on charges of felony battery by strangulation and misdemeanor battery following an alleged domestic violence incident involving a woman.
Ross, whose real name is William Leonard Roberts, was taken into custody on Thursday, October 1, according to police and jail records.
The arrest has placed the 50-year-old rapper at the centre of a criminal case in which the allegations remain to be tested in court.
ValidViewNetwork reports that the charges against Ross are allegations, and his arrest does not amount to a finding of guilt.
TWO BATTERY CHARGES
Reports from Miami indicate that Ross was booked on a felony count of battery by strangulation and a separate misdemeanor battery charge.
The charges are linked to an alleged domestic violence incident, although authorities have not established through a court verdict that Ross committed the offences.
Online jail records showed bond amounts of $5,000 for the battery-by-strangulation charge and $1,000 for the battery charge.
Ross is scheduled to be arraigned on October 22.
The circumstances surrounding the alleged incident were still developing as of Thursday, with investigators expected to provide further information through the court process.
EX-GIRLFRIEND HAD ALLEGED INJURIES
The arrest also came days after an ex-girlfriend of the rapper posted photographs on social media showing what she described as injuries suffered during an alleged physical assault.
It was not immediately established whether those allegations were directly connected to the criminal case that resulted in Ross’s arrest.
Authorities and Ross’s representatives had not publicly established that connection at the time of reporting. The case is therefore expected to proceed through the normal criminal justice process, including arraignment and any subsequent plea or trial proceedings.
