Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has directed Julius Berger Nigeria Plc to immediately commence remedial work on the collapsed section of the East-West Road at Agbarho in Ughelli North Local Government Area.
The affected portion of the major federal highway failed following heavy rainfall and erosion, causing difficulties for motorists, residents, transport operators and businesses that depend on the route.
The directive was disclosed by the state Commissioner for Works, Rural Roads and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, in a statement issued in Asaba on Thursday.
ValidViewNetwork reports that although the East-West Road is owned by the Federal Government, Oborevwori ordered the intervention because of the hardship the failed section was causing road users in Delta and other parts of the country.
‘GOVERNANCE SHOULD BE DRIVEN BY THE NEEDS OF THE PEOPLE’
Aniagwu said the governor was concerned about the disruption and had directed Julius Berger to move in and undertake emergency remedial work.
He explained that the state government’s intervention was not based on ownership of the road but on the immediate needs of people using the corridor.
“Although the East-West Road is a Federal Government-owned infrastructure, the governor is concerned about the hardship being experienced by Deltans and other Nigerians using the corridor,” Aniagwu said. “Consequently, he has directed Julius Berger to immediately intervene and undertake remedial works on the failed portion of the road.”
The commissioner added: “For us, governance should be driven by the needs of the people and not by bureaucratic boundaries.”
MAJOR NIGER DELTA ECONOMIC CORRIDOR
The East-West Road serves as an important transport route across the Niger Delta, carrying commuters, agricultural produce, commercial goods and other services.
The collapse of the Agbarho section has therefore created concerns beyond the immediate road users, particularly for transport operators, traders and businesses that depend on the corridor.
The state government said the remedial intervention was intended to improve movement and reduce the hardship caused by the damaged section.
Motorists have also been advised to exercise caution when approaching the affected area while work continues.
ValidViewNetwork reports that the immediate intervention is a remedial measure on the failed section and does not change the federal ownership of the East-West Road.”
