ENUGU – A significant sigh of relief can now be heard across Enugu State and beyond, as the newly reconstructed New Artisan Twin Bridge, a critical artery on the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway, has officially reopened to traffic today, June 6, 2025. This vital infrastructure, which tragically collapsed on September 25, 2023, has been meticulously rebuilt by the federal government, restoring seamless connectivity for commuters and trade.
The collapse of the bridge, which occurred on September 25, 2023, caused considerable disruption, forcing motorists to seek alternative, often lengthier routes. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) had issued advisories, redirecting traffic and highlighting the severe impact on movement between Enugu, Port Harcourt, Aba, and Abakaliki. Investigations at the time indicated that one side of the bridge collapsed, and the other was deemed weak, prompting a full reconstruction.
Following the incident, the Federal Ministry of Works, under the leadership of Minister David Umahi, swiftly moved to address the collapse. The reconstruction contract was awarded to China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), a renowned firm with a strong track record in major infrastructure projects in Nigeria.
Minister Umahi had set an ambitious deadline of October 2024 for the completion of the project, a deadline that appears to have been met, as evidenced by today’s reopening. While the exact cost of the reconstruction has not been widely publicized, the federal government’s commitment to delivering this crucial project underscores its dedication to infrastructure development and easing the burden on road users.
The reopening of the New Artisan Twin Bridge is a testament to the collaborative efforts between the federal government and the Enugu State government, who had also been actively involved in advocating for and monitoring the reconstruction process.
The return of full traffic flow on this vital bridge is expected to significantly reduce travel time, boost economic activities, and enhance the overall experience for commuters traversing the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway.
The reconstructed bridge stands as a symbol of resilience and progress, erasing the memory of its collapse and ushering in a new era of improved connectivity in the region.
