Akwa Ibom Commissioner Ini Ememobong Resigns,Citing Anti-Defection Stance Amid Governor Eno’s APC Move

Uyo, Akwa Ibom State – In a significant development reverberating through Akwa Ibom’s political landscape, Ini Ememobong, the Commissioner for Special Duties, has reportedly tendered his resignation from Governor Umo Eno’s administration.

The resignation comes amidst widespread speculation and confirmed reports of Governor Eno’s imminent defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), a move that has seen the governor issue a directive for all cabinet members to follow suit or resign.

Sources close to Mr. Ememobong indicate that his decision is rooted in “personal conviction” and an unwillingness to defect to the APC, effectively choosing party loyalty and principle over his cabinet position.

This development stands in stark contrast to the governor’s recent stance, where he reportedly informed his cabinet members that their continued allegiance to the PDP would necessitate their resignation.Governor Eno’s anticipated defection, which has been the subject of intense rumour for weeks, was confirmed recently when he reportedly told his executive council that he would be moving to the APC and expected his appointees to join him.

This directive has created a clear divide within the state’s political class, testing the loyalty of many who served under the PDP.

Ini Ememobong, who previously served as the Commissioner for Information and Strategy before being moved to Special Duties and Ibom Deep Seaport, is a prominent figure in Akwa Ibom politics.

His resignation, driven by a firm stance against switching political parties, highlights the ideological battle playing out within the state’s government as the governor prepares for his political realignment.

The coming days are expected to reveal the full extent of the ripple effects of Governor Eno’s defection and how many other appointees will choose to either follow him to the APC or, like Ememobong, resign their positions based on personal convictions.
