Tinubu Praises Dangote, Addresses Critics, and Vows to Reclaim Illegally Created Islands

Lagos, Nigeria – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday visited the sprawling Dangote Petroleum Refinery, a pivotal industrial complex, in the company of prominent Nigerian business magnates, Femi Otedola and Abdul Samad Rabiu, Chairman of BUA Group.

The President’s visit underscored the government’s commitment to industrial growth and economic diversification.

During his visit, President Tinubu offered a robust defense of the ongoing Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road project, directly addressing its critics. “I appeal to you, David,” President Tinubu said to the Minister of Works, David Umahi, “don’t listen to those critics; they don’t know what they’re talking about. If they don’t like the road or it’s too expensive, toll it for them.”

This statement signals the government’s resolve to continue with the ambitious infrastructure project, potentially introducing tolls to manage costs and generate revenue.

In a strong message regarding urban planning and environmental protection, President Tinubu also declared his administration’s intent to revoke illegal land approvals. Addressing the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, who was present at the event, the President stated, “Take it that we will revoke all those approvals given on setbacks, and please note that we are very serious about it, no more approvals for those unapproved islands being created illegally.”

This directive suggests a forthcoming crackdown on unauthorized constructions and reclamation activities in Lagos, aimed at restoring urban planning integrity and protecting coastal ecosystems.

The visit also featured a lighthearted moment during the official proceedings. As the Master of Ceremonies introduced Alhaji Aliko Dangote as “President of Dangote Group,” the industrialist quickly interjected. “Mr. MC, for your attention, next time when Mr. President is around, my title is Chairman, not President. Don’t call me President o,” Dangote clarified with a smile, emphasizing his respect for the Head of State.

President Tinubu’s visit to the Dangote Refinery, alongside key private sector players, highlights the government’s ongoing engagement with industrial leaders to foster economic development.
