Kano, Nigeria – Residents of Daneji in Kano Municipal Local Government Area are living in fear after an African rock python reportedly escaped from the private residence of former Accountant General of the Federation, Ahmed Idris. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, July 23, has ignited widespread panic and prompted a police investigation into the keeping of dangerous animals in a densely populated area.

The escaped python has yet to be located, leaving the community on edge. “Since the python escaped, everyone has been living in fear,” stated Nurulhaq Kabir Muhammad, a resident, to Arewa PUNCH. He added that other animals at the residence were evacuated on Tuesday. Another resident, Rabi’u Isma’il, described the situation as “terrifying,” noting that many parents have stopped allowing their children to play outside. Aisha Lawal, a mother of three, has called for swift intervention from authorities, emphasizing, “This is not just about the snake – it’s about our safety.”
Police and Emir Intervene
The Kano State Police Command has launched an investigation into Alhaji Ahmad Idris for maintaining dangerous pets, including pythons and crocodiles, within the city center. Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, confirmed that Idris was invited for questioning regarding the tension and pandemonium caused by the animals.

According to Commissioner Bakori, Idris has agreed to surrender all the dangerous pets to the state zoology department. However, the police are continuing their investigation to ascertain if the animals have caused any injuries or disruptions among residents. An intelligence unit has been dispatched to the State Zoology to verify the surrender of the pets and to determine if there have been any casualties from the escaped python.
Adding to the pressure, the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi, has issued a stern warning to Ahmed Idris. After receiving complaints from Daneji residents, the Emir cautioned Idris that he would be held responsible if anything were to happen to anyone due to the dangerous pets.
Former AGF’s Past Controversies
This incident casts a new spotlight on the former AGF, who served under the Muhammadu Buhari administration. Idris previously faced a high-profile corruption investigation involving the alleged misappropriation of over N109 billion. He was arrested and arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in connection with the case, and while legal proceedings are ongoing, he has largely maintained a low profile since leaving office.
The circumstances surrounding the python’s escape and the safety measures, if any, that were in place at the residence remain unclear. Efforts to reach the former AGF or members of his household for comment have been unsuccessful.
The community is now urging security agencies and relevant authorities to prioritize finding and safely evacuating the reptile to prevent any potential harm.
