LAGOS & OWERRI – Anxiety grips the Eziama community in Ikeduru, Imo State, following the reported abduction of Chief (Dr.) Chika John Obasi, a prominent son of the community and a leading contender for the traditional throne. Gunmen allegedly stormed his residence in the Ajah area of Lagos State at approximately 8:00 PM. on Wednesday, May 14th, and forcibly took him away, according to sources close to the family.
Chief Obasi is widely tipped to succeed his late father, Eze C.A Obasi Oparaugo, Ekwueme Orji 1 of Eziama Ikeduru, who recently passed away. This development has fueled speculation that the abduction may be linked to the ongoing succession battle for the Eziama kingship.
While details surrounding the incident remain scarce, initial reports suggest that an unspecified number of armed individuals arrived at Chief Obasi’s Lagos home and whisked him away in what appeared to be a targeted operation The motive behind the abduction is yet to be officially confirmed by law enforcement agencies.
However, multiple sources within the Eziama community and close associates of the Obasi family have indicated a strong suspicion that the incident is connected to the intense competition and political manoeuvring surrounding the vacant traditional stool. The passing of Eze C.A Obasi Oparaugo has reportedly intensified existing rivalries within the royal family and the broader community regarding who will ascend the throne next.
“This is a very troubling development,” stated a respected elder from the Eziama community, who preferred to remain anonymous due to the sensitivity of the situation. “Chief Chika Obasi is a well-respected figure and a natural successor to his father. We pray for his safe return.”
Efforts to reach the Lagos State Police Command for official comment on the abduction were ongoing at the time of this publication. It remains unclear whether a ransom demand has been made.

The abduction of Chief Obasi has sent shockwaves through the Eziama community in Imo State, with many expressing fear and uncertainty about the future. The incident also highlights the often-contentious nature of traditional leadership transitions in Nigeria.
Authorities are urged to launch a swift and thorough investigation into this abduction and ensure the safe return of Chief (Dr.) Chika John Obasi. The community is anxiously awaiting updates and praying for his well-being.
Further developments will be reported as they become available.
