The Board of Trustees of Abdulrasaq Abubakar Toyin University (AATU), Ilorin, Kwara State, has announced the appointment of Professor Olayemi Mikail Olaniyi as the institution’s first substantive Vice-Chancellor.
According to a statement released by the University Registrar, Emmanuel Obafemi, the appointment was ratified during the Board’s third meeting on September 4, 2026, taking effect immediately.
Congratulating the newly appointed head, the Pro-Chancellor and Council Chairman, Professor Abdul-Rasheed Na’Allah, noted that the decision was carefully considered to steer the young institution toward optimal efficiency. He emphasized that Professor Olaniyi is expected to leverage his extensive academic background and administrative acumen to build a robust framework for the university’s daily operations and long-term development.
Academic and Professional Background
Aged 47 and a native of Ibadan, Oyo State, Professor Olaniyi brings roughly two decades of robust experience spanning computer security, intelligent and embedded systems, applied medical informatics, and open distance learning.
His academic trajectory includes:
- National Diploma: Computer Technology, Federal Polytechnic, Offa.
- Degrees: B.Tech and PhD in Computer Science and Engineering (Specializing in Computer Security) from Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, alongside a distinction-grade M.Sc. in Electronic and Computer Engineering from Lagos State University.
- Career Progression: He progressed through academic ranks at Bells University of Technology, Ota, before joining the Federal University of Technology (FUT), Minna, as a Professor of Computer Engineering in 2021. Prior to this appointment, he served as the Dean of the Faculty of Computing at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN).
Accomplishments and Affiliations
An accomplished scholar, Professor Olaniyi has authored over 195 academic publications and successfully attracted research grants exceeding N350 million. He maintains active professional affiliations with the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) as a registered computer engineer, the Nigerian Computer Society (NCS), IEEE, and the ACM.
