In operating theatres from New Orleans to cities across Nigeria, Professor Olawale Sulaiman has built a dual career defined by technical mastery and quiet sacrifice. The Louisiana-based neurosurgeon, who once held senior leadership roles at the Ochsner Neuroscience Institute, negotiated a substantial reduction in his American income—widely reported as 25 percent—so that he could devote nearly half of each month to treating patients in his homeland who lack access to specialised care.

Born on Lagos Island around 1970 into a large polygamous family of ten children, Sulaiman grew up sharing limited space and resources. A Nigerian government scholarship later enabled him to study medicine at the Medical University of Varna in Bulgaria, where he earned both an MD and an MSc. He went on to complete a PhD in neuroscience at the University of Alberta in Canada, neurosurgery residency at the University of Manitoba, and advanced fellowships in complex nerve reconstruction and spine surgery in the United States. Board-certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, he rose to become a professor of neurosurgery and system chairman of neurosurgery at Ochsner before shifting focus toward international work and Nigerian healthcare development.

Since 2010, Sulaiman and his wife, Patricia—a nurse practitioner with public-health training—have channelled their expertise through RNZ Global, the healthcare development and management company they founded. The organisation’s not-for-profit arm, the RNZ Foundation, has delivered free neurological treatment and surgeries to patients who could not otherwise afford them. Through these efforts and related medical missions, more than 500 free brain and spinal procedures have been performed, while preventive services and education have reached over 5,000 people.

Essential equipment and implants are routinely transported from the United States, and local doctors and nurses receive hands-on mentoring and training aimed at building lasting capacity rather than one-off interventions.

Sulaiman has described his motivation in straightforward terms: those who benefit from advanced education and global opportunities carry a responsibility to reinvest knowledge and skill in underserved communities. Colleagues who have worked alongside him on missions in Kwara State and elsewhere note both the clinical results and the deliberate transfer of technique and equipment. Beyond the operating room, he has held public roles, including appointment in 2019 as Special Adviser on Health Matters to the Governor of Kwara State and, in 2023, as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Ila-Orangun.

The pattern of monthly travel, equipment logistics, teaching, and free complex surgery continues to illustrate a practical model of diaspora contribution. Professional success, Sulaiman’s record suggests, gains deeper purpose when it expands access, restores function, and strengthens systems that outlast any single visit.
