Prof. Olusegun Idowu Elected FUNAAB DVC Academic

The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) has appointed Prof. Olusegun Mark Obafemi Idowu as its new Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), marking a significant leadership transition during the 232nd Statutory Meeting of Senate on November 27, 2025. ​ A registered Animal Scientist and FUNAAB alumnus, Prof. Idowu previously served as Director of the Institute of Food Security, Environmental Resources and Agricultural Research (IFSERAR) until January 2028. ​ He succeeds Prof. Olukayode Akinyemi, who now leads Aletheia University, Ago-Iwoye. ​

Academic and Professional Background

Born on October 2, 1965, in Ado-Odo, Ogun State, Prof. Idowu earned his B.Agric (Hons), M.Agric, and PhD in Monogastric Animal Nutrition from FUNAAB’s Department of Animal Nutrition. ​ He joined FUNAAB as a Graduate Assistant in May 1997, rising to Professor in October 2014 after over 28 years of service in teaching, research, and administration within the College of Animal Science and Livestock Production (COLANIM). ​ His research focuses on monogastric nutrition, including non-conventional feed ingredients for poultry and rabbits, mineral nutrition, cholesterol reduction in poultry products, and organic poultry systems, with 60 journal articles, 20 conference proceedings, and supervision of over 100 undergraduates, 35 MSc students, and 10 PhDs. ​

Key Administrative Roles

Prof. Idowu has held pivotal positions at FUNAAB, including Acting Head of Animal Nutrition Department, Pioneer Director of Distance Learning Centre (2015-2019), Chairman of Senate Coordinating Committee on Examination Results (SECOCER), and Chairman of Timetable and Examination Committee (TIMTEC). ​ Externally, he serves as a Federal Government appointee on the University of Lagos (UNILAG) Governing Council and belongs to bodies like the Nigerian Society for Animal Production, Nutrition Society of Nigeria, and World Poultry Science Association. ​ He has secured grants such as DelPHE (£59,100) and EDULINK ACP-EU scholarships, alongside multiple academic excellence awards during his studies. ​
