Nigeria’s communication and media community is in mourning following the death of Professor Idowu Akanbi Sobowale, OON, one of the country’s foremost communication scholars, veteran journalists and education administrators. He passed away on the morning of Thursday, October 8, 2026, at the age of 85.

A family statement titled “Transition to Glory,” issued by Dr Akinniyi I. Sowunmi, confirmed the news. It described the loss as a heavy blow to the communication community, particularly the Association of Communication Scholars and Professionals of Nigeria (ACSPN). “Our father, Pa Deacon Professor Idowu Akanbi Sobowale, OON, 85, joined the saints triumphant this morning, October 8, 2026. Details of his funeral rites to be announced by the family soon,” the statement read.

Born on January 4, 1941, in Ashipa near Abeokuta, Ogun State, to a peasant farmer father and a petty trader mother, Sobowale’s early life offered little hint of the academic and professional heights he would later scale. He did not enter a classroom until January 1954, at about the age of 13, after years of farming and a brief stint as an apprentice mechanic. His academic brilliance quickly became evident: within months of starting formal education, he ranked among the top performers in his class.

He began his journalism career at the Daily Times in the mid-1960s after excelling at the newspaper’s training school under Australian director Leslie W. Riley. Rather than completing the full year-long programme, he was recommended for the newsroom after only about two months. Under the mentorship of the late Alhaji Babatunde Jose, he rose through the ranks, serving as a war correspondent, editor of the Evening Times and assistant editor.

Driven by a desire for self-improvement, Sobowale enrolled at the University of Lagos, where he earned a Diploma and a First Class BA (Hons) in Mass Communication, emerging as the best student in his class and earning a six-week sponsorship to the United Kingdom. In 1975 he left the Daily Times to join UNILAG as an assistant lecturer in the Institute of Mass Communication. He later proceeded to Syracuse University in the United States, returning in 1978 with a PhD specialising in precision (or scientific) journalism.

Sobowale is widely credited with introducing systematic public opinion polling to Nigerian journalism. While still at UNILAG, he established a polling desk at The Punch Newspapers under then-editor Sam Amuka. The first survey results were published in April 1979, marking a pioneering contribution to data-driven reporting in the country. He later delivered his inaugural lecture at Lagos State University on the theme “Opinion Polling in Nigeria: The Neglected Route to National Development.”

In academia he served twice as acting Head of the Department of Mass Communication at UNILAG and played a key role in the conceptualisation of Lagos State University (LASU) in 1983. He became Professor of Communication Studies at LASU and served as pioneer Dean of its School of Communication (Adebola Adegunwa School of Communication) from 2004 to 2007. He later held deanship positions at Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, where he developed the postgraduate programme in mass communication, and contributed to institutions including Covenant University and Caleb University, Imota, which named its Faculty of Communication and Media Studies in his honour. Colleagues fondly called him “ID Noble.”

Beyond the classroom and newsroom, Sobowale served in public office as Special Adviser on Education to former Lagos State Governor Alhaji Lateef Jakande and later as Commissioner for Education under Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu between 1999 and 2003. In recognition of his contributions to national development, former President Olusegun Obasanjo conferred on him the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON).

He was Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Association of Communication Scholars and Professionals of Nigeria, which instituted the biennial Idowu Sobowale International Conference in his honour. The conference continues to explore themes linking scientific journalism, media and democratic development.

Professor Sobowale leaves behind a lasting legacy as a teacher of teachers who mentored generations of journalists and communication scholars, many of whom occupy influential positions in media, academia and public life across Nigeria. Funeral arrangements will be announced by the family in due course.
