Tinubu Appoints Maj. Gen. Famadewa (Rtd) as Special Adviser on Homeland Security

ABUJA — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of Major General Adeyinka A. Famadewa (Rtd) as his Special Adviser on Homeland Security. The move is seen as a strategic step to overhaul Nigeria’s internal security framework and foster deeper synergy among the nation’s intelligence agencies.

​The announcement was contained in a press release issued Monday by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) and signed by the Head of Information and Public Relations, Chris Ugwuegbulam.

​A Decorated Strategist

​Maj. Gen. Famadewa, a highly decorated retired officer, brings over 30 years of experience in military intelligence, counter-terrorism, and security diplomacy to the role. His appointment is expected to bolster the “Renewed Hope” agenda’s focus on proactive risk management and intelligence-driven operations.

​A significant highlight of his career was his tenure as the Principal General Staff Officer (PGSO) to the National Security Adviser between 2015 and 2021. During this period, he was instrumental in establishing the Intelligence Fusion Centre (IFC). This platform revolutionized how the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), National Intelligence Agency (NIA), DSS, and the Nigeria Police Force share critical data to assess national threats.

​Intellectual Leadership

​Beyond his operational background, Famadewa is regarded as a thought leader in security circles. Following his retirement, he served as a Senior Research Fellow at the Nigerian Army Resource Centre in Abuja.

​He is the author of the influential monograph, “Policing and National Security in Nigeria,” which advocates for a paradigm shift in civil-security cooperation and institutional reforms within the police force.

​Strengthening Internal Fronts

​In the circular released by SGF Senator George Akume, the President emphasized that Famadewa’s primary mandate would be to bridge the gap in internal security coordination.

​”The appointment underscores the administration’s commitment to deepening inter-agency collaboration in addressing emerging security threats,” the statement read. President Tinubu urged the new Special Adviser to deploy his vast institutional knowledge to safeguard the country’s territorial integrity and national interests.

​The appointment takes immediate effect, as the administration continues to recalibrate its strategy against kidnapping, banditry, and other domestic security challenges.
