Ibadan,Oyo State -Students of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, have strongly opposed the recent renaming of their institution to Omololu Olunloyo Polytechnic, Ibadan. The decision was announced by Governor Seyi Makinde during a ceremony honoring the late former Oyo State Governor and the institution’s first rector, Victor Omololu Olunloyo.

However, the Student Union Government (SUG), led by President Comr. Oladipupo Olamide, described the renaming as “unjustifiable and degrading.” In a statement released Thursday evening, the students expressed deep disappointment, emphasizing the institution’s 50-year legacy of academic excellence and national recognition under its original name.
The statement read in part:
“We believe this decision disregards the rich heritage and identity of our school. The Polytechnic Ibadan has built a strong reputation that should not be erased. We urge the government to reconsider and immediately reverse the renaming.”
The students also expressed readiness to engage in dialogue to explore alternative ways to honor the late statesman without compromising the institution’s identity.
Governor Makinde’s decision follows the recent passing of Chief Omololu Olunloyo, who died days before his 90th birthday. The renaming was intended as a tribute to his contributions to the state and the institution.
The controversy has sparked debate among alumni, staff, and the wider community, with many calling for a balanced approach that respects both tradition and tribute.
The Polytechnic Ibadan remains a key educational institution in Oyo State, known for producing skilled graduates who contribute significantly to Nigeria’s development.
