Police Open Investigation into Nurse’s Death at Umahi’s Home

​The Ebonyi State Police Command has intensified its investigation into the death of 26-year-old nurse, Mary Habila, who was discovered lifeless in the Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area residence of the Minister of Works, David Umahi.

​According to the command’s spokesperson, SP Joshua Ukandu, the incident was first reported to the Ohaozara Police Division on June 27, 2026. Responding officers were directed to the David Umahi Federal Teaching Hospital, where medical staff confirmed that Ms. Habila had been brought in dead. The case was subsequently transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department to ensure a thorough inquiry.

​Preliminary findings indicate that Ms. Habila and a colleague, identified as Anita Baaki, were part of the medical team assigned to Minister Umahi and were present at his country home when the incident occurred.

​Despite the ongoing investigation, police authorities disclosed that the family of the deceased has formally declined to authorize a post-mortem examination. Nevertheless, the command remains firm on the necessity of an autopsy, citing the sensitive nature of the case and the legal requirement to definitively establish the cause of death.

​”The Command is set to engage the services of a pathologist to conduct a post-mortem examination that will help determine the cause of death and support the ongoing inquiry,” the statement noted, adding that the presence of the family or their appointed representative is required to proceed.

​The command has pledged to maintain a transparent and impartial investigation, promising to provide further updates as the process continues. Meanwhile, calls for a wider, independent probe into the matter have begun to emerge, including public appeals for federal intervention.
