Veteran Nollywood actor Pete Edochie, who has been married for 57 years, has advised married men never to pray for a situation where they would have to depend on their wives for food.
He warned that such dependence could expose a man to ridicule and emotional distress, saying: “The kind of insult that will be heaped on you because your wife is feeding you, don’t ever think about it.”
A Veteran’s Warning
ValidViewNetwork gathered that veteran Nollywood actor Pete Edochie has offered a piece of marital advice that has sparked widespread debate: married men should never pray for a situation where they would have to depend on their wives for food.
The 79-year-old actor, who has been married for 57 years, made the remarks while featuring on Isbae U’s interview platform, Curiosity Made Me Ask.
“You Would Want to Take Poison”
Edochie, known for his no-nonsense delivery and deep baritone voice, said such a situation could expose a man to ridicule and emotional distress.
“I want you to listen properly. This is wisdom from somebody who has been in that institution for almost 60 years. I have been married for the past 57 years,” he began.
“If things change and your wife has to feed you for two or three days, you would want to take poison. The kind of insult that will be heaped on you because your wife is feeding you, don’t ever think about it,” he warned.
A Traditional View of Roles
The veteran actor’s comments reflect a traditional view of marriage, where the husband is expected to be the primary provider.
He cautioned men not to take this responsibility for granted, suggesting that reversing these roles could lead to humiliation and a loss of respect.
His advice has drawn mixed reactions, with some praising his candour and others criticising his views as outdated.
However, Edochie, who has become known for his outspoken views on marriage and family, stood by his position, framing it as hard-earned wisdom from nearly six decades of marital experience.
Not the First Controversial Remark
This is not the first time Edochie has made headlines for his views on marriage and relationships.
During the same interview, he also sparked debate by stating that kneeling to propose to a woman means “surrendering family headship” .
He also expressed his views on domestic roles, saying that washing his wife’s underwear is not his idea of showing love.
A Lesson for Nigerian Youths
Pete Edochie’s blunt advice is a reminder that marriage is a partnership, not a power struggle.
While his views on gender roles may seem traditional to some, they reflect a deep-seated belief in the importance of mutual respect and clear responsibilities.

The same people who criticise his views will never allow their own children to grow up without understanding the value of hard work and responsibility.
For young Nigerians, the lesson is clear: marriage requires effort from both partners.
The same leaders who talk about gender equality will never allow their own families to be torn apart by conflict over roles.
Respect your partner. Fulfil your responsibilities. And never forget that a healthy marriage is built on mutual respect, not control.
