PENTAGON ESTABLISHES RELIGIOUS AFFAIRS OFFICE UNDER DEPARTMENT OF WAR TITLE

NEW OFFICE CREATED AT THE PENTAGON

The United States military has established an Office of Religious Affairs to oversee a broad range of religious and spiritual programmes within the defence establishment.

The office was created through a memorandum to senior Pentagon leadership and will have responsibilities covering religious ministry, facilities, logistics, chaplain procurement and training.

The new structure will also oversee youth programmes, faith-based homeschooling support and research and technology relating to spiritual fitness and resilience.

The director of the office is to have direct access to the Secretary of War under the new structure.

NO COMPULSORY RELIGIOUS PARTICIPATION

The memorandum contains an explicit limitation on the office’s authority. It states that nothing in the memorandum should be interpreted as compelling religious participation.

That provision is significant because the office’s responsibilities cover religious and spiritual programmes while the military remains responsible for personnel with different religious beliefs and those with no religious affiliation.

The creation of the office comes after the Trump administration restored “Department of War” as a secondary title for the Department of Defense in September 2025.

WHY THE ‘DEPARTMENT OF WAR’ TITLE MATTERS

The use of the “Department of War” title is a reference to an earlier name for the US military department responsible for land forces.

ValidViewNetwork reports that the new American office is formally focused on religious affairs within the military, while the memorandum expressly states that personnel cannot be compelled to participate in religious activities.

The establishment of the office is therefore best understood through the responsibilities contained in the memorandum rather than through comparisons with unrelated historical institutions.
