He Prayed, Then Entered the Operating Room: Pastor Idachama Makes History at RCCG Hospital

There is something quietly beautiful about a pastor entering an operating theatre.

Not because prayer has failed.

But because prayer and medicine have finally been placed where they have always belonged: side by side.

Pastor Alexander Idachama has become the first patient to undergo robotic-assisted surgery at Redeemer’s Health Village in Redemption City, Ogun State.

The hospital, owned by the Redeemed Christian Church of God, recently introduced robotic surgery in partnership with RoboMed Global.

The procedure was a robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy. Idachama, a pastor and PhD holder in Electrical Engineering, chose the hospital after learning that the technology was available locally.

RCCG described the procedure as a milestone in its commitment to healthcare, highlighting the precision of robotic surgery, smaller incisions and the use of magnified surgical views.

According to the church, the patient was home the following morning.

When prayer meets the operating theatre

And perhaps that is where this story becomes bigger than one pastor or one hospital.

For years, some religious conversations have created a false choice. Pray or see a doctor. Trust God or trust medicine. Fast or take treatment.

But faith was never designed to make human effort unnecessary.

The Christian language of “pray and work” captures the point more honestly.

Prayer does not forbid the hospital.

Faith does not cancel science.

And asking God for healing does not mean refusing the hands, knowledge and technology through which healing may come.

There is an equally memorable lesson in Islamic tradition.

A man asked the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) about leaving his camel untethered while trusting Allah.

The answer is commonly rendered: “Tie it and trust in Allah.”

The wisdom is simple. Trust does not remove responsibility.

Tie the camel

That principle crosses religious boundaries. If a person is sick, pray. Then see the doctor.

If surgery is recommended, seek competent medical care. If medicine is prescribed, use it appropriately. If a hospital has the technology that can help, use it.

Then pray again if faith is part of your life.

That is not a failure of faith. It is responsibility.

And perhaps Pastor Idachama’s own experience makes the point more powerfully than any sermon could.

He did not abandon his faith because he entered an operating room. He carried his faith into it.

RCCG deserves recognition

There is also a legitimate institutional story here. RCCG deserves credit for investing in a health facility capable of performing robotic-assisted surgery in Nigeria.

Redeemer’s Health Village says the technology is intended to expand access to advanced surgical care and reduce the need for some patients to travel abroad for treatment.

That matters. Nigeria has spent years losing patients and medical professionals to medical tourism and the wider weaknesses of its health system.

Every facility that brings advanced treatment closer to patients changes that equation, even if only incrementally.

The bigger test, however, is sustainability. Advanced equipment is expensive. Specialist expertise is expensive.

And the real measure of such a facility will ultimately be whether sophisticated treatment can become accessible to more Nigerians rather than remaining available only to those who can afford it.

Faith should not fear competence

There is an important lesson here for religious communities. A believer can kneel and still seek a surgeon. A Christian can pray and still submit to a medical examination. A Muslim can trust Allah and still tie the camel.

There is no contradiction.

The contradiction begins when religious language is used to discourage people from seeking appropriate medical care.God, for those who believe in God, does not become smaller because a surgeon uses a robot.

Science does not become godless simply because it works.

And a doctor does not become the rival of faith because human hands are used to save human lives.

Sometimes the most practical expression of faith is to do the work available to your hands. Pastor Idachama’s story offers precisely that picture. He prayed. He sought medical care. He entered the operating theatre.

And a machine, guided by trained human hands, became part of the answer. ValidViewNetwork reports.
