Ahead of the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York City, former Nigerian Vice President Professor Yemi Osinbajo delivered a compelling message at the Africa Business Forum, hosted by the Africa Business Club at Columbia University in collaboration with Nigerians in New York.
In a rich and insightful discussion alongside Daniel Jaiyeoba, Osinbajo tackled the persistent debate on the “choice to japa” — a popular Nigerian term for migrating abroad in search of better opportunities. He urged Nigerians in the diaspora and at home to rethink this choice, framing it not as an escape from difficult circumstances but as an opportunity for meaningful contribution to Africa’s growth story.

The conversation focused on the ease of doing business in Africa and the growing responsibilities the diaspora holds in driving transformation on the continent. Osinbajo emphasized the vast opportunities awaiting those who invest their talents, resources, and vision back home, highlighting that true leadership is less about domination of the stage and more about uplifting others.
A remarkable moment occurred midway through the event when the moderator, Daniel Jaiyeoba, an accomplished photographer and creative, unexpectedly ceded the floor to Tolani Alli, Osinbajo’s Special Assistant, Personal Photographer, and Head of Content and Production. This gesture beautifully illustrated Osinbajo’s leadership philosophy—the empowering of others to step forward and showcase their gifts.

The forum was also enriched by the presence of influential Nigerians including Dupe Olusola, former CEO of Transcorp Hotels Plc, Tayo Oviosu, founder and Group CEO of Paga, and Tochi Wigwe, underscoring the collective commitment of Nigerians to engage in discourse and action that foster development.
Osinbajo reaffirmed his conviction that Africa’s future lies not only in its abundant resources or youthful population but also in the willingness of its people to see one another, mentor, collaborate, and build together. His narrative called for a shift in mindset—viewing the diaspora not just as a pool of talent fleeing challenges, but as a vital force for innovation, investment, and progress on the continent.

The Africa Business Forum at Columbia University continues to be a critical platform for conversations that align culture, capital, and community to shape Africa’s trajectory, with events like these spotlighting the dynamic role of Nigeria’s leaders and diaspora in global economic transformation.
