Clément Vandenkerckhove is now a legal prince of Belgium, following a discreet town hall registration that crowned years of whispered rumors and private family reconciliation.
The dramatic shift in status comes after a paternity test conclusively proved that Vandenkerckhove’s biological father is Prince Laurent, the younger brother of reigning monarch King Philippe.
A Secret Kept for Decades
The roots of the royal surprise stretch back to the mid-1990s, when Prince Laurent crossed paths with Belgian singer and model Iris Vandenkerckhove—better known by her stage name, Wendy Van Wanten—at a Paris fashion show. The two shared a high-profile relationship, resulting in Clément’s birth in August 2000. This preceded the prince’s 2003 marriage to Princess Claire.
For years, the identity of Clément’s father remained an open secret within select social circles, fueled by subtle hints in Van Wanten’s song lyrics and his striking resemblance to the royal. However, Vandenkerckhove himself was kept in the dark until his sixteenth birthday, when his mother finally disclosed the truth.
