PORT HARCOURT – Apostle Chibuzor Chinyere, the General Overseer of Omega Power Ministries (OPM), has sparked fresh public debate after announcing his intention to arrange a marriage for his 21-year-old adopted daughter, Chiemeka Chibuzor, who is autistic.
In a statement released via his official social media channels on Tuesday, the cleric detailed an extensive welfare package for any suitor willing to marry Chiemeka. The “incentive” package includes a lifetime of financial support, rent-free housing for life, and a new home built and registered in the joint names of the couple.
Apostle Chinyere specified that prospective husbands must be “young, physically, and mentally fit in all forms.” He emphasized that the arrangement is a protective measure designed to ensure the young woman, who is verbal and capable of hearing, is cared for and happy throughout her adult life.
To ensure her safety, the cleric noted that OPM staff would conduct regular, unannounced “welfare checks” on the household.
This move comes on the heels of the highly publicized March 29 wedding of “Aboy” (now renamed Elijah), a non-verbal autistic man also under the cleric’s care, to an older bride. While that union was celebrated by some as a compassionate act of inclusion, it drew sharp criticism from disability rights advocates and ethicists who raised concerns regarding informed consent and the potential for exploitation in arranged marriages involving individuals with cognitive disabilities.
Chinyere has consistently defended these actions as humanitarian efforts. Following the backlash from the previous wedding, he gifted the couple a Lexus vehicle and a plot of land, further appointing the groom as an ambassador for the OPM Free School for Children with Autism and Down Syndrome.
