Onyinye Iweala Secures Tenure, Promoted to Associate Professor at UNC

​CHAPEL HILL, USA — In a milestone achievement that further elevates a family legacy of global excellence, Dr. Onyinye Iweala has been officially promoted and confirmed with lifelong tenure as an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of North Carolina (UNC) School of Medicine in Chapel Hill.

​Dr. Iweala, a distinguished allergist and immunologist, is the daughter of Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and Nigeria’s former Finance Minister.

​Prior to this landmark academic promotion, Dr. Iweala served as an Assistant Professor of Medicine within the Division of Rheumatology, Allergy, and Immunology at the UNC School of Medicine, where she also commands respect as the Director of the Allergy Mast Cell Disorders Program.

​Dr. Iweala’s academic climb matches her trailblazing scientific contributions. Her pioneering research focuses heavily on the immunologic mechanisms behind Alpha-gal syndrome (AGS)—a complex, tick-bite-associated allergy that causes delayed, life-threatening allergic reactions to red meat and mammalian products.

​As a cornerstone of the UNC Food Allergy Initiative, her laboratory studies how unconventional T cells, glycolipids, and specific antibody pathways trigger hypersensitivity disorders. Her brilliance in this niche domain secured her a prestigious $1-million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) to unlock the mysteries of mammalian meat allergies.

​Her academic foundation is steeped in elite scholarship. Dr. Iweala graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University before completing her dual MD/PhD program at Harvard Medical School and the Harvard Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, focusing on Experimental Pathology. She went on to finish her residency in Internal Medicine at the prestigious Massachusetts General Hospital before joining UNC Chapel Hill for her clinical and research fellowships.
