One of Nigeria’s foremost Microbiologists and former Vice-Chancellor, Elizade University, Ilara-Mokin, Ondo State, Distinguished Professor Olukayode Amund stands tall today at the University of Lagos, Akoka as he is decorated an Emeritus Professor.

The event forms part of the 55th Convocation Ceremony of the University where both Prof Amund alongside another highly revered academic, Prof. Babajide Alo are to assume Emeriti status of the Institution.

The award is in recognition of their contributions to scholarship and the academia, just as another top academic, Prof. Victor Ariole of the Department of European Languages bags the Gold Medal Award for his ongoing contributions to the Institution and the nation.

In similar vein, Director-General of World Trade Organization and former Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.

For Prof. Amund who bowed out of UNILAG two years ago when he clocked 70 and after 45 years meritorious service to the University, the conferment of Emeritus Professor, the highest honour in the academia, is a fitting honour.

Prof. Olukayode Oladipo Amund who was born in Lagos on 5th May 1953 in Suru-lere Local Government Area of Lagos State, started out in Ile-Ife where he attended Methodist Primary School and St John’s Grammar School between 1958 and 1969 to obtain the First School Leaving and the West African School Certificates. He returned to Lagos to attend St. Gregory’s College, Obalende, Lagos for the Higher School Certificate (1972-73) and the University of Lagos (1974-77) from where he obtained a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) degree in Biology, graduating with a First Class.

This earned him an in-service training scholarship for post-graduate studies in the United Kingdom between 1979 and 1982. During his undergraduate studies at the University of Lagos, he won the National Award (Federal Scholarship) for the best performance in Part 1 Examinations in his Department as well as the National Schools’ Fund Prize in 1975.

He started his Master’s degree programme at the University of Kent at Canterbury in October 1979 and after an assessment of research progress within a year; his candidature was converted to Ph.D. However, he completed his Ph.D programme in Biotechnology within three years after a first degree at Cranfield University, Bedford in October 1982, having transferred from Kent to Cranfield in 1981.
