The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, has publicly dismissed rumors of any strain in his relationship with former Anambra State governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, following Obi’s congratulatory message that called the monarch “my dear brother.”
After Obi’s congratulatory note on the installation of Oba Ladoja as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland on September 26, 2025, sparked backlash from critics such as Reno Omokri, Oriyomi Hamzat, and Lere Olayinka, the monarch clarified in a recent phone conversation that he was not offended by Obi’s choice of words. Some critics argued that addressing a monarch in such familiar terms was culturally inappropriate and disrespectful. However, Oba Ladoja rebutted those claims, affirming the warm and respectful friendship he shares with Obi.
In his words, the Olubadan questioned, “No, who said that? Why should I be angry with Peter Obi calling me his brother and friend? Am I not his brother and friend?” His response was confirmed by Prof. Pius Abioje, who also quoted the monarch invoking a Yoruba proverb emphasizing the value of friendship and respect towards a king.
Peter Obi had stated that his words came from a place of goodwill and respect, intending no disrespect to the revered stool. He also noted that his use of “my dear brother” reflected an expression of goodwill typically used in close relationships with great respect for the individual. Obi further clarified that he always adheres to protocol and authority in his communications and frequently uses similar expressions when addressing respected elders.
Oba Ladoja’s unequivocal remarks have put to rest speculations of any animosity, reaffirming the cordial relationship between the traditional ruler and the former governor, and highlighting the mutual respect shared between these two prominent Nigerian leaders.
