The Nigerian media landscape and the ancient city of Ibadan were thrown into deep mourning on Saturday as news filtered in regarding the passing of the veteran journalist, historian, and quintessential public relations practitioner, Oloye AbdulRasheed Olalekan Alabi.
He died in Lagos on Saturday morning, August 1, 2026, at the age of 76.
The transition of the revered Abese-Olubadan of Ibadanland marks the end of an illustrious era defined by professional excellence, cultural stewardship, and an unmatched standard of sartorial and behavioral elegance.
A Towering Legacy in Media and Public Relations
Born on October 27, 1950, Oloye Lekan Alabi lived a life characterized by trailblazing achievements across journalism, broadcasting, and corporate communications. His professional journey began at the defunct Sketch newspaper, where he etched his name in history as one of the country’s youngest and most formidable dual columnists.
He later lent his stellar voice and intellect to the Western Nigeria Broadcasting Corporation (WNBC), which transformed into the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Ibadan, and subsequently helped birth the Television Service of Oyo State (now BCOS). As a testament to his broadcast footprint, he was the very first reporter to appear on the BCOS television channel.
Oloye Alabi’s dexterity in public communication earned him the rare and historic distinction of serving as the Chief Press Secretary to multiple governors—spanning both military and civilian administrations—in the old Oyo State. His reputation for absolute loyalty, discretion, and sharp administrative acumen later saw him transition into the corporate sphere as the pioneer Public Affairs Manager (later General Manager, Corporate Affairs) for the Odu’a Investment Company Limited, steering the conglomerate’s image for 17 years until his voluntary retirement in 2006.

Beyond his professional CV, Oloye Alabi was widely celebrated for his unique persona. Avuncular in gait, perpetually resplendent in traditional attire that showcased his deep pride in Yoruba heritage, and unfailingly warm to high and low alike, he was a bridge builder par excellence.
As the Abese-Olubadan of Ibadanland and the Cultural Ambassador of the National Museum and Monuments in Ile-Ife, he remained a fierce custodian of history, tradition, and communal values. He also heavily dedicated his post-retirement life to preserving the legacies of historical Yoruba icons, serving on the boards and foundations of greats such as Adegoke Adelabu (Penkelemesi), Yusufu Olatunji, Adekunle Fajuyi, and D.O. Fagunwa.

Confirming his passing, Adeola Oloko, Media Aide to the Olubadan of Ibadanland, stated:
”The veteran journalist and multiple Press Secretary to former Oyo State governors, Lekan Alabi, is dead. The Abese Olubadan passed away this morning in Lagos at the age of 76 years.”
