Abuja Police Crack Down on Cable Thieves and Fake Diplomatic Plates

​ABUJA — The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has launched a sweeping onslaught against criminal networks plaguing the nation’s capital, recovering multi-million-naira vandalized public infrastructure and a massive haul of unauthorized official and diplomatic license plates.

​The aggressive clampdown, spearheaded by the command’s leadership, aims to dismantle the lucrative illicit trade driving economic sabotage and heightened insecurity across residential and commercial districts.

​Cracking Down on Critical Asset Vandalism

​Law enforcement operatives executed coordinated, intelligence-led raids across strategic flashpoints including Maitama, Garki, Durumi, Jabi, Apo Legislative Quarters, Lugbe, and Nyanya. The operations successfully neutralized syndicates targeting vital public amenities.

​Recovered exhibits include heavy-duty armored cables used for high-tension electricity transmission, critical internet communication lines, solar street lighting components, and metal drainage covers. According to the command, the targeted destruction of these assets has crippled power supply to entire communities, plunged neighborhoods into dangerous darkness, and triggered avoidable road traffic accidents and pedestrian injuries.

​Five primary suspects have been apprehended in connection with the thefts:

​Issuing a stern ultimatum to receivers and scrap dealers, police authorities warned that the dragnet has been extended to dealers and black-market syndicates trading in stolen public property. Extensive forensic investigations are currently underway to dismantle the entire supply and disposal chain.

​In a practical step toward community restoration, the recovered infrastructure exhibits were formally handed over on site to the Director of Facility Maintenance at the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) for immediate reinstallation.

​In a parallel operation, the FCT Police Command exposed a dangerous security loophole involving the rampant proliferation and illegal use of counterfeit government and diplomatic license plate numbers.

​Investigations revealed that criminal syndicates manufactured and distributed unauthorized plates to individuals seeking a shield of immunity to perpetrate nefarious activities and evade law enforcement checkpoints within the territory.

​Operatives confiscated a large inventory of the fraudulent plates during targeted operations, impounding several vehicles used as fronts. The drivers and producers behind the racket are currently in police custody and are slated to face immediate prosecution upon the conclusion of ongoing investigations.
