The inspection highlighted the 250-bed multi-specialty hospital’s potential to transform healthcare delivery and reduce medical tourism in Nigeria.
A UN Stamp of Approval
The Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, Amina J. Mohammed, has visited the Gateway Medical Centre of Excellence in Abeokuta, accompanied by the Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun, CON.
The inspection marked a significant moment for the state’s healthcare ambitions, as the UN’s second-highest official toured the 250-bed multi-specialty facility.
During the visit, Governor Abiodun conducted the UN Deputy Secretary-General around the medical facility, highlighting the administration’s commitment to transforming healthcare delivery in the state.
A Facility of Firsts
The Gateway Medical Centre of Excellence is a 250-bed multi-specialty hospital equipped with modern medical infrastructure and designed to address the challenge of inadequate healthcare facilities in the state .
The facility is intended to strengthen Ogun’s capacity to provide specialised healthcare while reducing the need for residents to seek treatment outside the state.
The hospital offers specialised medical services across several fields, including obstetrics and gynaecology, radio-diagnostics, orthopaedics, neurology, neurosciences, surgery and other specialised medical services.
A Reduction in Medical Tourism
The Gateway Medical Centre of Excellence aims to retain medical spending within the state, reducing the need for Nigerians to travel abroad for specialised healthcare.
Since commencing radio-diagnostic services, the facility has already attended to more than 600 patients.
A Broader Legacy
The Gateway Medical Centre was commissioned by First Lady Oluremi Tinubu in August 2026, alongside the 108-unit Muhammadu Buhari Estate .
The projects are part of Governor Abiodun’s broader development agenda, which has also included the Gateway International Airport, the Onijanganjangan Power Project and the reconstruction of the MKO Abiola Sports Arena .
