Abeokuta, Ogun State – Ogun State is mourning the loss of one of its most revered figures, Chief Olatunde Ayinla Abudu, who passed away on Monday at his residence in Abeokuta at the age of 96. A colossus in both industry and education, Chief Abudu’s death marks the end of an era for a man widely celebrated for his profound impact on the development of the state and beyond.
Until his demise, Chief Abudu held the esteemed title of Maiyegun of Egbaland, a testament to his deep roots and influence within the community. His legacy is particularly notable in Ogun State’s industrial landscape, where he was a pioneering force, and in the educational sector, where his vision brought forth institutions of excellence.
In accordance with Islamic rites, Chief Abudu was laid to rest swiftly after his passing within the grounds of Noble House College, Abeokuta. This institution, which he founded and meticulously nurtured, stands today as one of Ogun State’s premier academic establishments, a lasting monument to his dedication to learning. The Janazat prayer, a solemn occasion, was led by the Chief Imam of Egbaland, Sheikh Sa’ad Bamgbola, and drew a multitude of dignitaries from across Nigeria, reflecting the widespread respect and admiration Chief Abudu commanded.
Among the prominent personalities who gathered to pay their final respects were former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Ogun State Deputy Governor Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele, Senator representing Ogun Central Shuaib Afolabi Salisu, former Governor Ibikunle Amosun, and Nigeria’s former High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Sarafa Tunji Isola.
Former President Obasanjo, in a heartfelt tribute, described Chief Abudu as a “rare gem” whose contributions to industry and community development would be incredibly challenging to replicate. “He was the greatest industrialist in Abeokuta and in Ogun State. His place will be very hard to fill,” Obasanjo remarked, underscoring the immense void left by his passing.
Similarly, Senator Ibikunle Amosun extolled the late patriarch’s far-reaching influence and his unwavering commitment to the progress of Ogun State and Nigeria. “Chief Abudu gave his all to us in Abeokuta, to us in Ogun State, and by extension, to the entire country,” Amosun stated.
He further added, “Hardly would anything positive happen in Abeokuta without his fingerprints. He had a hand in every beautiful thing that has shaped this city.”

Amosun also commended Chief Abudu’s honesty and courage, remembering him as one of the few elder statesmen who “would always say things as they are, calmly but truthfully.”
Chief Olatunde Abudu’s distinguished life spanned decades of unparalleled business acumen, profound philanthropy, and unwavering advocacy for education. He will be fondly remembered for his visionary leadership, quiet yet powerful influence, and an unshakable commitment to the development and betterment of his community.
