ABEOKUTA — The Ogun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has moved to quell rising tensions within its ranks, dismissing viral social media reports that it has finalized its list of senatorial candidates for the 2027 general elections.
In a strongly worded statement issued Tuesday, the party’s Publicity Secretary, Femi Nuberu, described the circulating lists as “strange and dangerous fabrications.” He urged party members and the public to rely only on official channels to avoid being misled by misinformation.
The Confirmed Resolutions
While the party debunked the senatorial list, it officially confirmed two major resolutions reached during Monday’s high-profile caucus meeting at the party secretariat:
- Governorship: The state caucus has unanimously endorsed Senator Olamilekan Solomon (Yayi), the current representative of Ogun West, as the party’s consensus governorship candidate for 2027.
- Presidency: The chapter reaffirmed its total support for President Bola Tinubu, pledging a “bloc vote” from Ogun State for his 2027 re-election bid.
The Senatorial Deadlock
Despite the party’s official denial, internal sources suggest a complex power play is unfolding behind the scenes. While the party maintains that no decision has been reached, a top chieftain told The PUNCH that the Ogun Central seat appears settled, with former Governor Ibikunle Amosun reportedly cleared to return to the Red Chamber.
However, the seats for Ogun East and Ogun West remain “inconclusive” due to overlapping interests among the party’s heavyweights:
- Ogun East: Though billboards for Governor Dapo Abiodun have appeared across the state, he has yet to formally declare interest. He faces a potential clash with the incumbent, former Governor Gbenga Daniel, who is reportedly eyeing a second term.
- Ogun West: With Senator Adeola moving toward the governorship, the seat is highly coveted. Deputy Governor Noimot Salako-Oyedele is rumored to be a top contender, though the party leadership is reportedly considering various strategic factors before making a final call.
”Consultations are Essential”
Adding to the political intrigue, former Nigerian High Commissioner to the UK, Ambassador Sarafa Isola, has called for calm among his supporters. Isola, who also harbors governorship ambitions, emphasized that he is currently engaging in “broad and meaningful consultations” with critical stakeholders.
”Leadership, at defining moments such as this, demands patience, clarity, and a firm commitment to the greater good,” Isola stated, promising to communicate a formal position after his deliberations.
A State in Transition
As the APC works to balance the interests of its various caucuses, the Presidency is reportedly keeping a close watch on the developments in Ogun. For now, the party insists that any narrative outside the endorsement of Senator Adeola and President Tinubu is a fabrication, even as the battle for the remaining legislative tickets intensifies.
