Cody Gakpo, a star in the Netherlands, has been transferred to Liverpool by Eredivisie powerhouse PSV for a record sum.
Gakpo’s move was announced by PSV in a statement posted on their website on Tuesday night.
Gakpo has signed a six-year contract with the Premier League’s heavyweights.
The club wrote “PSV and Liverpool FC have reached an agreement on the proposed transfer of Cody Gakpo. The 23-year-old attacker will leave for England imminently where he will be subjected to the necessary formalities ahead of the completion of the transfer.
“Both clubs are not making any announcements about the transfer fee. “But this is a record transfer for PSV,” said general manager Marcel Brands.
“The PSV management completed the negotiations on Boxing Day and gave Gakpo permission to travel to England.”
Gakpo, an Eindhoven native and PSV academy alum, debuted for the team’s first squad in February 2018.
He was named the Dutch Footballer of the Year in 2021–2022 after tallying 21 goals over 47 appearances in all competitions.
Gakpo was qualified to compete for Ghana, Togo, or the Netherlands at the international level.
He represented the Netherlands in youth international football from the under-18 to the under-21 level, and he made his senior debut in June 2021 at Euro 2020.
Gakpo made his UEFA Euro 2020 debut against North Macedonia in the third round of the group stage as a substitute in the 79th minute for Frenkie de Jong after being called up to the senior Netherlands team. Since Martien Vreijsen in 1980, he was the first player from the Netherlands to make his international debut in a European Championship.
He was named to the 2022 World Cup squad where he made an impression, scoring in three straight Group A games against Senegal, Ecuador, and Qatar.
