Barack Obama and Tom Hanks have brought politics, Hollywood and literature into the same room, but their latest conversation is less about Washington or cinema than about the stories that shape the way people understand life.
The former United States president and the Oscar-winning actor feature together in the opening episode of “A Great Book with Barack Obama”, Obama’s new six-part podcast centred on books that have influenced his worldview.
The first conversation focuses on Marilynne Robinson’s Gilead, a novel about an ageing Protestant minister writing a letter to his young son while reflecting on faith, mortality, fatherhood and the ordinary beauty of life.
That choice gives the Obama-Hanks conversation a deeply personal starting point.
Rather than presenting the episode simply as another celebrity interview, the series uses literature as a doorway into wider questions about identity, family history and American society.
Hanks brings the perspective of an actor and storyteller, while Obama approaches the book from the standpoint of a reader whose public life has for years included discussions of literature and reading.
The conversation forms part of a broader project in which Obama has selected six books that have remained important to him.
Other works in the series include Toni Morrison’s Song of Solomon, James Baldwin’s The Fire Next Time, John le Carré’s Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Cormac McCarthy’s All the Pretty Horses and Robert Penn Warren’s All the King’s Men.
The former president has described the books as works that helped him understand himself, society and the human experience.
The Obama-Hanks episode therefore offers more than a meeting between two famous Americans. It asks what happens when a book becomes a meeting point for two people from very different parts of public life.
The series was launched on Audible on September 24, with each episode pairing Obama with a guest to explore one of the selected books. ValidViewNetwork reports.
