ABEOKUTA – The National Universities Commission (NUC) has officially granted approval to the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), to introduce six new undergraduate degree programmes.

The full-time academic courses are scheduled to kick off dynamic operations starting with the 2026/2027 academic session, aligning directly with the university’s ongoing admission cycle which opened earlier this June.

Rigorous Screening Preceded Greenlight

The NUC’s regulatory node of approval came via an official letter addressed to FUNAAB’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Babatunde Kehinde. The decision followed a comprehensive Resource Assessment Visit conducted by an expert panel from the commission. During the exercise, the NUC meticulously evaluated the university’s institutional readiness, inspecting the specialized laboratories, material assets, and the structural depth of qualified teaching staff required to anchor the new disciplines.

Diversifying Into Global High-Growth Sectors

The newly approved Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) programmes mark a calculated expansion beyond the institution’s core agricultural mandate, steering into high-impact fields of public health, biotechnology, and advanced environmental science.

The six accredited courses include:

  • B.Sc. Geophysics
  • B.Sc. Public Health
  • B.Sc. Biotechnology
  • B.Sc. Science Laboratory Technology
  • B.Sc. Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH)
  • B.Sc. Clothing and Textile

According to a statement signed by the Acting Head of the Directorate of Public Relations, Mr. Olasunkanmi Olajide, this curriculum expansion reflects FUNAAB’s strategic goal to produce highly specialized graduates capable of tackling modern technological, environmental, and global health challenges.

Integration with Ongoing Admissions

The greenlight for these courses coincides with FUNAAB’s active 2026/2027 pre-admission screening exercise, which runs until July 24, 2026. Prospective applicants who sat for the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and wish to pivot to these newly available fields will be monitoring guidelines through the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and the school’s central admissions portal as the selection processes mature.

With these additions, the management underscores its structural transition into a versatile science and technology hub, strengthening its nationwide reputation for academic innovation and workforce development.
