EDE, NIGERIA — Redeemer’s University has achieved a historic milestone in its academic evolution following official approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC) to launch its Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme, alongside a suite of competitive medical, engineering, and postgraduate courses.

The clearance marks a massive expansion of the university’s scholarly frontiers and solidifies its rising profile within the West African higher education landscape.

The approval is the culmination of a rigorous resource verification exercise conducted recently by the apex regulatory body at the university’s main campus in Ede, Osun State.

A Decisive Step into Clinical Medicine

In an official letter addressed to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Shadrach Olufemi Akindele, and signed by the Director of Academic Planning, Abubakar Girei, on behalf of the NUC Executive Secretary, the commission confirmed that the new full-time programmes will officially take effect from the upcoming 2026/2027 academic session.

The newly approved undergraduate courses cut across high-demand medical specialties and advanced engineering fields:

  • MBBS – Medicine and Surgery
  • BDS – Dental Surgery
  • Pharm D. – Doctor of Pharmacy
  • B.Sc. – Pharmacology and Therapeutics
  • DPT – Doctor of Physiotherapy
  • B.Eng. – Mechatronic Engineering

In tandem with the undergraduate expansion, the NUC also greenlit a comprehensive selection of postgraduate programmes to deepen research capacity. These include Postgraduate Diplomas (PGD), Master of Science (M.Sc.), Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.), and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) tracks in the following disciplines:

  • Architecture
  • Human Physiology
  • Physiotherapy
  • Human Anatomy (M.Sc., M.Phil., and Ph.D. arms)

Leveraging Global Health Pedigree

Redeemer’s University enters the competitive terrain of medical training with an elite global reputation already intact. For over 12 years, the institution has been a prominent continental powerhouse in public health and genomics research.

Through its world-renowned African Centre of Excellence for Genomics of Infectious Diseases (ACEGID), the university has consistently delivered critical data and interventions during outbreaks of Lassa fever, Ebola, and COVID-19. Its scientific milestones have earned direct endorsements and partnerships from top-tier health organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO), the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), and the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (US CDC).

This rich research foundation is expected to give the pioneer medical and pharmacy cohorts an unparalleled edge in clinical science and evidence-based healthcare delivery.

”Not Our Final Destination” — Management Reacts

Reacting with enthusiasm to the development, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Shadrach Olufemi Akindele, dedicated the achievement to divine providence and the unrelenting commitment of the institution’s founding fathers.

”First and foremost, all the glory goes to God for making this possible,” Professor Akindele stated. “We want to thank the Visitor to the University, Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, for his constant support throughout this journey. We also deeply appreciate the proprietors of the university, the Board of Trustees, Council members, and our staff, as well as our beloved parents and students for their roles in making this feat a reality.”

Looking toward the future, the Vice-Chancellor emphasized that the expansion is only a stepping stone in a larger blueprint for academic dominance.

”This is certainly not our final destination. We have set our sights on becoming the foremost training institution in Nigeria, not only in medicine but also across all faculties at Redeemer’s University. When it comes to quality education built on godly character, parents will have every reason to choose us,” Akindele added.

With the 2026/2027 academic session on the horizon, the university is poised to commence admissions for these newly approved courses, opening fresh pathways for thousands of prospective applicants seeking top-tier training in medicine, technology, and spatial design.
